A first prize of $4000 was offered in an attempt to lure Bobby Fischer. During tournament organizations, it was reported that he had accepted an invitation. Boris Spassky had also indicated his intent to play in this event. Ultimately, neither Bobby Fischer nor Boris Spassky participated.
